Connecting a dishwasher: How to proceed?

Installing a dishwasher can seem daunting, especially if you’re unfamiliar with plumbing and electrical work. However, with the right instructions and a little planning, it’s entirely possible to hook up your dishwasher yourself, provided the necessary connections are already in place.

Whether you’re replacing an older model or installing a dishwasher for the first time, it’s important to follow certain steps to avoid water leaks, electrical problems, or even damaging your appliance. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step to successfully complete this installation safely. And if you’d rather leave this job to professionals, Plomberie Urgence Montréal (PUM) is here to take care of everything, from A to Z.

Steps for connecting a dishwasher

1. Check the dishwasher and location

First of all, you need to open your dishwasher’s box and make sure it’s in good condition. If it’s a new appliance, you can also check the instruction manual for specific instructions for the model you purchased. You’ll also need to make sure the location you plan to install your dishwasher meets the following requirements:

  • A cold water inlet with an accessible shutoff valve.
  • A wastewater drainage system, generally connected to the sink or a dedicated hose.
  • A grounded electrical outlet that complies with safety standards, is protected by a 30 mA residual current device (RCD), and is ideally located at least 1 meter from the water source.

If any of these items are missing, or if you have any doubts, it is recommended that you call a professional to install your dishwasher.

2. Connect the water supply

The dishwasher’s water supply hose must be connected to the shutoff valve. If this valve already exists, proceed as follows:

  • Turn off the water at the source.
  • Connect the dishwasher’s inlet hose to the faucet, making sure to insert a gasket.
  • Tighten the connection firmly, but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the threads.

If no valve is present, you will need to install a self-piercing valve on a copper pipe with a diameter between 10 and 16 mm. This operation requires some tools and experience, so it is recommended to call on the services of a plumber.

3. Connect the drain

For the evacuation of wastewater, several solutions are possible:

  • If a drain hose is available, insert the dishwasher drain hose into it, making sure it’s neither too far in (risk of backflow) nor too short (possible leak).
  • If there’s no dedicated drain, you can connect the hose to a connection flange on the existing drain pipe or connect it to the sink drain using a suitable fitting.

Always make sure to respect the recommended slopes to avoid water stagnation.

4. Connect the power supply

The dishwasher must be plugged into a protected and compliant electrical outlet:

  • Plug the appliance into a grounded outlet, ideally a dedicated outlet.
  • The outlet must be equipped with a 30 mA residual current device (RCD) and be at least 1 meter away from the water source.

5. Set up and test the device

Once the connections have been made:

  • Gently slide the dishwasher into place, being careful not to pinch any pipes or cables.
  • Adjust the feet so that the appliance is perfectly level, which will prevent vibrations and ensure proper drainage.
  • Run a short cycle to check that everything is working properly, with no water leaks or electrical malfunctions.
