Unclogging your washbasin yourself or calling a plumber?
A clogged washbasin or kitchen sink can sometimes be cleared with home remedies like a plunger, a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, or a manual drain snake (just be careful not to damage your sink or basin when using these tools!). These methods may work for minor blockages caused by soap residue, hair, or grease buildup.
However, if the water continues to drain slowly after several attempts or if the blockage keeps returning, the problem could be more serious and may require a plumber’s intervention. A deep obstruction in the pipes or a large mass of debris can be difficult to remove without professional equipment. Our experts use mechanical drain snakes, high-pressure jets, and inspection cameras to locate and effectively remove blockages, while also preventing future issues.
If your washbasin remains clogged despite your efforts, it’s best to call a professional to avoid damaging your pipes and ensure optimal drainage! The good news… at Plomberie Urgence Montréal, we are the experts in drain unclogging in Montreal!
Recommended methods for unclogging sinks and washbasins
Unclogging sinks and washbasins is a common plumbing task that can be done using several methods, depending on the severity of the blockage. One of the first techniques to try is pouring boiling water or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. You can also use a plunger, which can often release minor obstructions by creating pressure to move the blockage. Note that there are specific plungers for sinks: there’s no need to use the same one you use for toilets! If this doesn’t work, a drain snake, a flexible tool, can be used to dislodge deeper blockages by inserting a metal rod into the pipe. There are also chemical unclogging solutions, but these products can damage the pipes over time (and harm your health!) so it is recommended to avoid using them for your sink.
If the blockage is in the pipe under the sink or washbasin, it can be cleared by unscrewing the trap (make sure to place a bucket underneath first!) to try and dislodge the obstruction.
The easiest solution is to contact our team at PUM. Depending on the situation, we can carry out a video inspection of the pipes to precisely locate the blockage, allowing us to choose the most appropriate method, whether it’s a drain snake, high-pressure cleaning, or hydro jetting. This advanced technology allows us to dislodge even the toughest blockages without damaging the pipes. If necessary, we will perform partial disassembly to solve the problem at the source. In all cases, your sink or washbasin will drain like new after our team’s intervention!
